A Career with MMS

Maclay Murray & Spens LLP is a full-service Law Firm with offices in four locations, three in Scotland's major cities and one in London, providing UK-wide coverage and support for our clients. At MMS we believe that a modern law firm is about more than the technical ability of the lawyers. It is also essential that the delivery of that technical knowledge is as good as it can possibly be and achieving that requires every member of our team to be operating at the top of their game, be they mailroom staff, receptionists, secretaries, lawyers or one of the many other outstanding professionals we have working within the firm.

It follows then that we need to recruit and retain the best talent and, increasingly, that means recognising that some of the best people will want to work on an agile basis. People have different drivers for seeking atypical working patterns including spending more time on hobbies and interests and charity work as well as for more traditional family reasons. We have been working hard to break down the existing belief that it is not possible to offer flexible working or family friendly arrangements within professional services. At MMS 30% of our staff have an atypical working pattern so we know that we can make it work.

MMS offers solicitors of all levels excellent development opportunities. Hands on experience, client management and Partnership support combine to enable our solicitors to thrive within a busy and exciting working environment.

Our solicitors are unable to excel without good support around them. With that in mind, we are always keen to hear from legal secretaries who are looking for a rewarding challenge and from professional support staff seeking a rewarding and challenging career within Facilities, Finance, HR, IT and Marketing.

The Firm is keen to develop talent internally and supports individuals keen to progress their career through training or experience. We believe that a successful career is about continuous development. Aligned with effective management, guidance and support, our staff experience high levels of job satisfaction.

We also appreciate that other things in life matter and often these can be difficult to balance. We encourage all of our staff to adopt a healthy approach to work.

MMS was proud to be a finalist in the Top Scottish Employer category of the Working Family Awards.

Is it really possible for a Lawyer to work flexibly?

    maclay murray & spens llp
    Answered on: 04/08/2016

Yes. Traditionally as a sector professional services has found it very difficult to provide widespread support for flexible working and family friendly arrangements due to a number of factors such as the transactional nature of the work, unpredictable workloads and demanding client expectations. We have been working hard to find ways to accommodate requests for atypical working patterns and have seen a 39% increase in the number of Fee Earners who have an agile working pattern so we know that it can work.
